Past simple vs present perfect
Compare the following sentences and usages:
Past simple tense Present perfect tense
The Little Prince is my favourite book. I read The Little Prince is my favourite book. I have
it last week. (We know when the speaker read read it many times. (We don’t know when the

read it.)
It states when the action happened. It emphasises what happened, not when it
happened.
We use the time expressions yesterday, … ago, We use the time expressions ever, just, already,
last …, etc. yet, before, many times, etc.
