Gerunds and infinitives
Infinitives – to+V
You can use the infinitive:
• after an adjective
These instructions are difficult to understand.
• after certain verbs
We hoped to win.
• afford • agree • fail • plan • prepare • pretend • promise
• appear • arrange • help (also without to) • refuse
• beg • hesitate • hope • want • wish • would like
• choose • learn • would love • would prefer
• decide • manage • mean
• expect • offer
Gerunds – V+ing
You can use the gerund:
• as the subject of a clause
Working until late hours is really exhausting.
• after prepositions
I did all the housework before leaving the house.
• after certain verbs
My mum enjoys cooking.
• admit • advise • allow • avoid • keep
• can’t help • can’t stand • mind • miss
• deny • dislike • permit • practise
• enjoy • suggest
• fancy • finish • waste time/money
• after verbs with prepositions
I believe in practising a lot to be successful.
