Will vs be going to
Simple future (will)
We use the future simple:
• for predictions about the future.
People will visit other planets soon.
• for promises (warnings or threats).
I’ll do my homework, I promise.
Don’t jump. You’ll hurt your legs.
• when we decide to do something at the
moment of speaking.
This shirt is lovely. I’ll buy it.
• with the verbs hope, think, believe, bet, etc. We
can also use with the expressions such as I’m
sure, I’m afraid.
I hope I’ll catch my plane on time.
I am sure he will pass his exam.
Time expressions with the future simple: tomorrow,
next week, month, year, tonight, this evening, soon,
in a week, month.
Be going to (future)
We use be going to to talk about:
• plans in the near future.
We are going to give a big party next week.
Luis is going to meet me at the airport
tomorrow.
• something that will happen because we have
evidence.
Maya is pregnant. She is going to have a baby.
Tim is tired. He is going to sleep soon.
Time expressions with be going to (future).
tomorrow, this weekend, tonight, next Monday,
next week, next month.
in two/three days’ time, the day after tomorrow,
tonight, soon, this evening, in a week/month/year.
