Articles and determiners
a. indefinite article: a/an
We use a/an:
• to describe a singular noun.
• before professions.
• when something is mentioned for the first time.
b. definite article: the
We use the:
• when we are thinking of a specific thing.
• before the usual places and people the speaker goes to.
(e.g. bank, market, doctor.)
• when something is mentioned before.
• before systems and services.
• with adjectives such as, rich, poor, unemployed, etc. to talk about groups of people.
• when there is only one of something.
• with a superlative form of adjectives.
• with well-known buildings, works of art, museums, or monuments.
• with rivers, seas, oceans, mountain ranges, and country names if the country has a political title
in its name, or if it refers to a group of states/islands.
• before ordinal numbers.
• before (plural) family names (refer to the whole family).
• before musical instruments.
• in some fixed expressions.
