6 Eating Habits
c. gerund or infinitive with to
Some verbs can be followed by a gerund or an infinitive with to, but with a difference in meaning.
e.g.
I’ve begun studying/to study Fine Arts. (with simple tenses, begin is followed by both gerund and
infinitive with to)
I’m beginning to study Fine Arts. (with continuous tenses, begin is followed by infinitive)
*start has the same meaning as “begin” with gerunds and infinitives with to.
I forgot calling him last night. (I called him, but I forgot that I called him)
I forgot to call him last night. (I was supposed to call him, but I forgot it)
I regret missing your game. (I’ve missed your game, so I’m sorry)
We regret to inform you that your application has been rejected. (formal fixed expression
for giving bad news. It means we are sorry to tell the news)
I remembered paying the bills. (I paid the bills and I remembered that I paid them)
I remembered to pay the bills. (I had to pay the bills and I did it)
I stopped eating snacks between meals. (I gave up eating snacks; I don’t eat them anymore)
I stopped to eat some snacks during the day. (I stopped in order to eat some snacks)
A. Combine the sentences using the gerund form.
1. Will didn’t take his holiday until June. He delayed it.

2. Carl was speaking French when Bob came in. He stopped.

3. Eric came home early to see the game. He didn’t want to miss it.

4. He may have an accident if he drives so carelessly. He risks it.
