Taking a Course 8
Reported speech: questions
There are two main question forms in English: Where are you
Wh- questions and yes-no questions. Therefore, going?
we report questions in two different ways.
a. reporting wh- questions:
We change the pronouns, tenses, and time in
questions, and we use ask as the reporting verb
in questions.
The usual word order is used in reported
questions. However, we form the sentence
following the question word like an affirmative
sentence.
e.g.
Kelly asked, “Where are you going?”
Kelly asked me where I was going.
Amy asked, “Where does Dan come from?”
Amy asked me where Dan came from.
Is it raining
b. reporting yes-no questions:
now?
The same changes we looked at before are also
made for reporting yes-no questions. However, we
use if/whether instead of the question word.
e.g.
Billy asked, “Is it raining now?”
Billy asked if it was raining then.
The manager asked, “Can you arrange the
meeting?”
The manager asked his assistant if she could
arrange the meeting.
