                    Grammar It clauses

                 A. Discuss the statements with a partner. Are they
                   true for you?
                   1. I can’t stand it when a rich person does
something wrong and gets away with it; whilst a
poor person does the same thing and gets
                      a really harsh punishment.
                   2. It’s a pity more millionaires don’t donate all their
money to charity – we could end world poverty
                      in a flash.

                   3. It seems that people are getting richer, younger
nowadays. Just think about all the YouTubers
and Instagrammers who are under 20.

Β. In each sentence, we have used the dummy it to
refer to something later in the sentence. Look at
the statements again and answer the questions.

                     1. What can’t the person stand?
                     2. What is a pity?
                     3. What seems to be happening?

                 C. Complete the text with it. There are eight missing.

Although may sound crazy, in April 2019, there was an unborn child with almost 250,000 followers on
Instagram. Why? Her parents had met on the US hit TV show, The Bachelor, and she will be their first
child, due in June 2019. Is a pity that nowadays we’re marketing children even before they’re born
and sharing so much of their private lives with the world. Whilst is nothing new for parents to manage
5 their celebrity children or for the paparazzi to hound the children of celebrities, I guess just annoys
many people nowadays that there are so many of them.
But seems that many parents are hoping their child will become the next influencer, with talent
agencies being flooded with emails from them. However, not every child is a natural in front of the
camera and so will never make it big. That’s not the case with Albanian-born Laerta Mataj, an 8-year-
10 old who poses wearing different outfits. And is not surprising that many companies are donating
outfits to her - with 1.2 million followers on Instagram, people will see their designs.

For some, marketing their child on social media has become a full-time job, and whilst is supposedly
illegal to have a social media account before the age of 13, a recent study in the UK estimates that
by that age there will be around 1,300 photos and videos of the child online.

15 So looks like little influencers are here to stay.
