C. Read the text and complete the sentences using the structures in exercise A.
Social media personality Brian Breach surprised shoppers in the run-up to Christmas, 2018. He took a
sign saying, “Homeless. Just need a little help to feed my family through the holidays” and stood outside
a shop where many people were buying Christmas gifts. He was holding a small red cup people could
leave a donation in. He had a friend filming what happened next.
Many people walked past, ignoring him. But others were kind enough to stop, either to talk to him or to
give him some money. That’s when Breach surprised them, by giving them money instead. Some people
started crying – they 1 (be) shocked by his generosity. One woman had stopped
to offer him food and instead walked away with $100 – she 2 (decide) to use that
money to help other people on the streets. Another man 3 (be) one of Breach’s 53,000
Instagram followers, as he recognised him. “You almost blew my cover!” Breach told him. But most people
4 (recognise) him dressed as a homeless person, wearing ripped, dirty trousers.
It 5 (be) easy for homeless people at any time of the year, but I imagine they
6 (feel) even more alone during times when other people are celebrating and spending
time with family and friends. Breach’s video made the news and that 7 (encourage)
other people to be more generous to homeless people – not because they 8 (turn
out) to be a celebrity in disguise, but because it’s the best thing to do.
D. Use the modal verb structures from exercise A to make sentences about the photos.
For example: The boy must have broken his arm. He might have been climbing a tree and fallen. The
man could be his uncle.
E. Discuss with a partner.

2. Your teacher hasn’t come to class today. Speculate as to what’s happened.
3. Your best friend suddenly won’t talk to you. Speculate as to why.
4. You can’t connect to the Internet. Speculate as to what’s happened.
