Grammar Linking verbs
A. Read the information.
Linking verbs do not describe an action; instead, they describe the subject.
Compare: I tasted the soup.
The soup tasted salty.
In the first sentence, I am performing the action of tasting something, but in the second sentence, the
verb taste describes the soup.
Be, become and seem are always linking verbs. Verbs of the senses are also linking verbs as well as
action verbs: feel, look, smell, sound and taste. Other linking verbs, which are also action verbs, are:
appear, get, go, grow, prove, remain and turn.
Look at the sentences below. Which contains a linking verb and which contains an action verb?
1. I love smelling fresh bread in the bakery. It always smells so warm and delicious!
2. The dog went crazy when we got home, so we went to the park for a long walk with him.
3. She appeared surprised when her best friend appeared at her door one evening.
B. Complete the text with the words in the boxes.
