                 A. Discuss with a partner.
                   1. What accessories do people often wear or have?
                   2. What’s your must-have accessory?
                   3. Look at the data in the bar graph below. How do
you think the results would compare if your peers
were asked about their favourite accessory?

                 B. Mark the sentences as true (T) or false (F).
                   1. A bar graph shows data in different categories.
                   2. Bar graphs can only be used to show
                      percentages.
                   3. We can use bar graphs to compare data
                      between groups.
                   4. Bar graphs always show quantities on a vertical
                      axis.

                          Favourite accessories in teens

We surveyed 110 of our peers to find out what their
favourite accessory was, with an even divide of
male and female respondents. From the results,
it is clear that smartwatches and sunglasses are
                    incredibly popular.
The results show that none of the females
surveyed chose signet rings as their favourite
accessory. This could be due to the fact that these
are more frequently worn by men. Similarly, it was
unsurprising that none of the males surveyed
chose earrings as their favourite accessory.
Although some of the male respondents did
have jewellery in their ears, this would probably
be referred to as a piercing, rather than an C. Read the text and look at the bar graph. Then
                    earring. answer the questions.
The data also shows that bags are important 1. How many males and females chose
for today’s teenagers, with almost a fifth of the rucksacks as their favourite accessory?
people surveyed choosing it as their favourite 2. In which categories were there no positive
accessory. This was also the option in which there responses?
was more similarity in responses from males and 3. Which accessories were more popular for
                    females.
                                                                        females than males?
In the Other column, the other items both male 4. What did only one respondent of a particular
and female respondents mentioned were belts, gender choose as their favourite accessory?
watches and acrylic nails. However, given the
low frequency of each and the fact that there 5. How many more males than females chose
was little of interest to compare between the two a baseball cap as their favourite accessory?
groups, the decision was taken to group these 6. Not including the Other column, what was the
                    items together. least popular accessory?
