The Catholic Church thought that by invading the Holy land, they 1 (be) able to drive the
Muslims out of Palestine. Religious people promised citizens that they 2 (be) fighting for a just
cause, and that any crusader 3 (be) granted eternal life in heaven after they died. The first
crusade was actually unofficial. A group of peasants led by Peter the Hermit 4 (plan / invade)
Jerusalem, but they were beaten in Anatolia. The first official crusade started in 1096, and the crusaders
captured Jerusalem in 1099. The joint European forces were powerful and maybe they 5
(hold) control over the city, but after the conquest, most crusaders considered that they had completed
their task, and returned home, meaning that Jerusalem was soon recaptured by the Muslims. After news
of this broke out, both Emperor Conrad III of Germany and King Louis VII of France 6 (go
/ return) there to retake the city, but neither accomplished much. In 1187, Christian forces went on a third
crusade, led by Richard the Lion Heart. Two other leaders, Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa of Germany and
King Philip Augustus of France, 7 (join) him, but they quarrelled en route and returned home.
Richard 8 (hope / capture) Jerusalem, but by then, Muslims were united under Saladin, and
Richard achieved very little except to come to an agreement with Saladin to allow pilgrims into Jerusalem,
which they 9 (be allowed) to do previously.
