                 E. You will listen to a teacher teaching an art student how to apply gold leaf to an illuminated
                   manuscript.
Before listening, suggest phrases that the teacher will use to teach and encourage the student.

                 F. Act out a conversation between a teacher and a student about: applying gold leaf or making a quill. Use
the instructions and the phrases in the table below.

Draw the outline of your design. How are you getting on?
Choose which areas you want gold. That’s looking great! Good job!
Paint those areas with gesso. So what you do is you…
Wait for the gesso to dry. Got that?
Breathe on the gesso. Have a go!

Lay gold leaf on the gesso. That’s looking stunning.
Rub the gold leaf until it shines. You’re clearly getting the hang of this!
I love this detail, it’s so intricate.

Take a large feather from a swan or goose. I think it’s really effective.
Cut the feathers to about 8–9 inches and cut off
the tip. Phrases to use when learning
Scrape away the waxy outer layer of the feather I made a mistake here.
                   with a knife.
I’m pretty proud of it, though I say it myself!
Pull out the membrane inside the feather.
Cut out a nib in the end of the feather with a
penknife and cut a slit down the middle.
