class. One student has finished the essay, and the other hasn’t. Suggest phrases that the students
                   might say to each other.

                F. Act out a conversation between two students who are working on an essay using the phrases in the
                   table below.
Student 1: You have finished your essay. Seek the other student’s approval.
                   Student 2: Give your approval.

                       Seeking approval Giving approval
What do you think of it? Is it any good? Hey, this is brilliant!
Do you really think so? You’re clearly getting the hang of it.
                                                                     Well done!
I’m pretty proud of it, though I say it myself.
You’ve put a lot of work into it. It shows.
                       I’ve spent ages on it.
I was up all night at the weekend.

                 B. Read the letter of apology and circle the correct answer.

                         Dear Toby,
I’m really sorry 1 to copy / for copying your essay. Please 2 take / accept my apologies.
I didn’t mean 3 for / to you to get into trouble. I thought it would be obvious to the teacher that
you had done the work, and I hadn’t.
The thing is, I’m really struggling with the workload this year, and the standard of work the
teachers expect from us is much higher than before. I’ve been getting really bad grades.
I wasn’t intending to copy your essay when I borrowed it, I promise. I just wanted to learn
from it. But then, I was up every evening on the week before we had to hand it in, working on
the geography and English essays, which took me forever. And so, when I finally got down to
starting work on history, well, your essay was just there, and so I relied on it more than I should
have. I thought that if I changed a few words, the teacher wouldn’t notice.
I’m really sorry that you had to stay in for detention and got a zero grade for your essay. I’m
going to own 4 up / out to the teacher tomorrow, 5 do / make an apology and 6 deny / admit
that it was all my fault, and hopefully she will give you a better grade. I know you worked hard
on that essay, and you deserve it.
Sorry again, I really do 7 apology / apologise.

                         Best wishes,
                         Natalie
