When I was six, I started 1 (learn) English. At first,
I struggled 2 (get) the pronunciation right but
I kept 3 (practise) and in the end, I got better.
When I was 12, I entered a competition to write a story in English.
I didn’t think it was worth 4 (get) my hopes up
because I didn’t feel my English was that good, but somehow,
I managed 5 (win) first prize! I was over the
                    moon!
To be honest, I never expected 6 (like) English

today, an award-winning novelist! I’ll never forget 9 (go) into a bookshop in my hometown
and seeing my book on the shelf.
Whenever people ask for advice on becoming a writer, I suggest never 10 (close) any
doors as you never know what you might turn your back on. And avoid 11 (drink) too
much coffee! I always have a cup first thing in the morning, but there were times when I’d spend hours
12 (write) and keep 13 (fill) up my cup – that led to a few sleepless
                    nights!
