Major Physical Features of South America
Grasslands:
The Pampas grassland covers most of South America.
A grassland is a large open area covered with grass.
Grasslands are often used to raise cattle and other livestock.
Grasslands Rivers:
The Amazon River runs through the Amazon rainforest, the
largest tropical rainforest in the world. Tropical means near
the Equator.
Rainforests have tall trees, warm climate, and lots of rain.
Amazon River Many unusual animals live near the river in the Amazon
rainforest.
Deserts:
The Atacama Desert in Chile is the driest place in South
America.
Mountains: Atacama Desert
The Andes Mountains stretch along the west coast of South
America. They are the longest mountain ranges in the world.
A mountain range is a series of mountains found close

Waterfalls:
Angel Falls in Venezuela is the world’s highest waterfall. It
rises to 979 meters (3,212 feet).
A waterfall is a place in a river where the water suddenly
falls downward to rocks or water below.
