Third conditional
We use the third conditional to talk about
something hypothetical in the past. We need to
use comma (,) when the sentence starts with the
if clause.
If I had known more about him, I would not have
trusted what he said.
(I didn’t know more about him so I trusted him.)
She would have found the place quicker if she
had used the navigation.
(She didn’t find the place quicker because she
didn’t use the navigation.)
The structure of the third conditional is as follows:
If + past perfect, ... would have/could have + V3
A. Complete the sentences in the third conditional with the verbs in brackets.
1. If you (answer) the phone, I (tell) you what had happened.
2. He (win) the Oscars if the production of the film (be) better.
3. I know Jack (write) to me if he (not lose) my address.
4. My mum (not be) angry with me if my little sister (put) her car
keys into the dishwasher.
5. The workers (go) on strike if the boss (not pay) their salaries on
time.
6. My family (buy) that house if it (be) a little bit cheaper.
