Science Energy and Electricity
Electricity is a form of energy, and we create it from other forms of energy. This can be done by burning
fossil fuels, such as coal and gas, or using renewable energy resources, like solar or wind power.
Nowadays, more people want to use eco-friendly energy sources because burning fossil fuels produces
huge amounts of smoke and releases dangerous carbon monoxide and other gases into the atmosphere.
However, there are benefits to using fossil fuels rather than renewable energy sources.
Firstly, it is much cheaper to produce energy using fossil fuels, and the source is readily available. Although
solar power and wind power stations are built in areas with the best conditions to produce energy, there is
no guarantee that it will be sunny or windy every day. Furthermore, the energy produced from solar and
wind energy can’t be stored, while electricity produced from burning fossil fuels can.
However, although resources like coal and gas are available now, at some point in the future, they will
have been used up. This is why many people want to invest more in renewable energy. Additionally, it
is easier to become energy-independent by installing a renewable energy generator on your property.
A. Discuss and complete with a partner.
1. You have one minute to write a list of objects fossil fuels – an energy source created
that use electricity. over millions of years
2. How many have you written? solar – from the sun
3. What different resources can be used to make eco-friendly – good for the environment
electricity? optimal – best, perfect
4. What do you know about the different guarantee – certainty that something
resources used to make electricity? will happen
install – build, place
