Clauses of contrast
We use but, although, despite, in spite of, however, yet,
whereas to express a contrast.
but -- He is very intelligent, but he doesn’t study.
He is quite rich, but he lives in poverty.
although -- Although + clause
Although he is quite rich, he lives in poverty.
in spite of -- In spite of + noun/-ing form
In spite of his wealth, he lives in poverty.
despite -- Despite + noun/-ing form
Despite his wealth, he lives in poverty.
however -- He is quite rich. However, he lives in poverty.
yet -- He is quite rich, yet he lives in poverty.
whereas -- He is 50 years old, whereas he looks much
younger than his age.
E. Combine the following sentences using although, as in the example.
Example:
They missed the bus, but they came to school on time.
Although they missed the bus. they came to school on time .
1. I slept very well. There was a party next door.
