6 Eating Habits
Grammar Gerunds vs infinitives
A. Read the passage and answer the following
questions.
The potato crisps business is a big, global
business. Crisp companies attempt to capture
the market by regularly bringing out new
flavours such as baked Camembert or salted
caramel. They even like to create ‘limited-
edition’ flavours, for example, ginger-flavoured
crisps dusted with golden glitter for Prince
Harry’s wedding. In this way, customers are
encouraged to buy the crisps quickly while they
are still available. Plain ready-salted crisps are
the most popular, although sales of cheese and
onion flavour threaten to overtake them. Wayne
Tomlinson from Doncaster started collecting
crisp packets, each with a different flavour, in the 1980s, and he claims to have amassed over 8,000
packets. He denies that eating all those crisps over the years is bad for his health. He says, “I usually plan
to find two or three new flavours each week. That’s not too many.” Wayne recommends waiting until
after your evening meal before testing your new-flavour crisps. He likes trying new products but misses
being able to eat spring onion crisps. They were his favourite, but crisp companies refuse to make them
anymore.
1. Why do crisp companies sell limited-edition flavours?
2. Does Wayne Tomlinson actually have 8,000 crisp packets, each with a different flavour?
3. What does Wayne Tomlinson deny?
B. Discuss with a partner.
1. Where are you planning to go next time you eat out?
2. Would you consider working in a restaurant in the future?
3. If someone was visiting your area, what restaurants would you suggest going to?
4. Was there anything you refused to eat when you were younger?
C. Put the verbs in the correct column.
