Alien: the high-school play
Most school theatre departments might decide to play it safe for their end-of-year
show, with a tried-and-tested musical such as Fiddler on the Roof or Grease. That
wasn’t the case for North Bergen High School, who put on a dramatic production of
Ridley Scott’s terrifying Alien.
The cast of the play performed their roles fantastically well, with Gabriella Delacruz
in the role of the fierce Ripley, originally played by Sigourney Weaver in the 1979 film.
Xavier Perez, in an incredible costume as the xenomorph which slowly hunts down
the spaceship’s crew, gave a bone-chilling performance. What’s more,
it’s incredible that the students were able to produce such authentic
costumes and sets using mainly recycled materials and donations from
a local stage design shop. Along with the spooky sound effects, the
production felt every bit as scary and ominous as the film.
The only thing not to like is that the play only ran for two nights
and, having now become an internet sensation, has left the world
wanting more. If they ever do a re-run, make sure you get a ticket!
C. Answer the questions.
1. Why was it surprising they put on a production of Alien?
2. Who directed the 1979 original?
3. What are the positive aspects of the production?
4. What does the critic say is unfortunate?
D. Tell your partner about a play you’ve seen. Use the questions
to help you.
• What was the plot?
• Was it based on a book or film?
• What did you enjoy about it?
• Was there anything that gave you a negative impression?
E. Now, write a review (160–190 words).
