A history of motion capture
Many people think of motion capture as a relatively new stage in the history of cinema, but it has
been around 1 there have been films on the big screen. In fact, its first use for the
entertainment industry can date back to 1915, 2 an animator named Max Fleischer
invented the Rotoscope. Max Fleischer created the Rotoscope 3 animators could
trace over live-action shots to give their characters a more realistic fluidity of movement.
Walt Disney watched some of Fleischer’s animated films and, 4 he liked the technique
so much, used rotoscoping for his first feature-length animated film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.
5 it was expensive, motion capture wasn’t frequently used in films. There are some
scenes in The Mummy (1999) where it was used to create the title character. And 6
George Lucas released Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace in the same year, we met the first
main character to be fully animated.
In all these films though, motion capture had been used to create characters separately to the main
filming. This changed with Peter Jackson’s The Two Towers 7 he used real-time motion
capture, meaning that the actor, in this case, Andy Serkis as Gollum, was in the motion capture suit
being filmed alongside the rest of the cast.
The technology has continued to develop, and following the 2011 motion capture masterpiece The
Planet of the Apes, some argued for the Academy Awards categories to be changed 8
motion capture performances could be officially recognised.
