                 C.     Listen to a conversation between a man, Adam Jones,
                   and a legal advisor about a defamation case, and answer
                   the questions.
                   1.  What sort of business does the man own?
                   2.  Who is Richard Mannings?
                   3.  What did Richard tell one of Adam’s clients?

                   4.  What happened after that?
                   5.  What evidence is needed to prove Adam’s case?
                   6.  What will Adam do next?
                   7.  Does Adam have a strong case? Why/Why not?
                   8.  What does the legal advisor offer to do?


                 D.  Listen again. Read the extracts below and suggest
                   meanings for the phrases in bold.
                   1.  I was fed up with doing all his work for him.
                   2.  He said to me that he’d been in touch with my best client.
                   3.  It was typical of him to get back at me like that.

                   4.  But a week later, the client pulled out.
                   5.  I’m scared of the business going under as a result.
                   6.  You’ll have to find that out if you want to take this further.
                   7.  If you have in fact broken the law somewhere along the
                      line, even unknowingly, you wouldn’t have a case.
                   8.  At the moment, it’s just his word against yours.


                 E.  Discuss the questions in pairs or as a class.
                   1.  Do you think it's worth Adam taking this case further? Why/Why not?

                   2.  Are you familiar with any cases of libel, slander or defamation in your life, in the news or in the press?
                   3.  In what ways can defamation be harmful?
