The Magic Beans

Jack and Sarah were playing outside when suddenly an old woman

appeared in front of them. Sarah was terrified and asked her brother if
they could leave, but the woman insisted that they must listen to her for
a few minutes. The woman told them that she had magical beans that
would grow into a money tree. At first, the children didn’t believe her, but
they were longing to have more money so she gave them three beans

and told them to try it for themselves. She made them promise never to
tell anyone. Jack and Sarah took the beans home and went
out into their garden. They dug a hole in the ground,

planted the beans, and then went to sleep. The next
day, they woke up to a fragrant smell, and they found
that the tree had already grown, and its branches were
                      covered in money.

                  1 Discuss the following questions.

1 Why do you think the children didn’t believe the woman at first?

2 What do you think their reaction might have been when they saw the tree,
                         covered in money?
