The EU’s Institutions
The European Union has three important institutions, among others: Parliament, Council, and
Commission. Each has its own president and speci c function.
The European Parliament
The European Parliament President is elected by members of the European Parliament.
• The Parliament President guarantees that the parliament system is running correctly and monitors the
di erent activities of the Union.
• The President represents the parliament and international relations in all matters.
• The Parliament President also gives approval of the nal EU budget, or assigned money, over a speci c
period of time.
The European Council
The European Council president is appointed by the national leaders, who lead each EU country.
• The Council President promotes unity of the European Council.
• The Council President also represents the EU on foreign and security issues and helps the member
countries to cooperate successfully.
The European Commission
The European Commission President is also appointed by the national leaders.
• The European Commission President gives political direction to the country leaders and arranges
conferences and meetings for the members.
