Renaissance advances in the areas of science and culture. Each culture

During the Middle Ages, many of the Roman and Greek advances
were lost and forgotten as the quality of life in Western Europe

declined. This di cult time, that started in the fth century, came to

be known as the Dark Ages, when wars, poverty, hunger, and

disease spread throughout the land. The Dark Ages, however,

began to decline with the arrival of the Renaissance era, or the

rebirth of the arts, sciences, and learning, in the fourteenth century.
