Are video games educational?
Social skills, mathematical reasoning, spatial awareness – these
are all things which gaming can teach us. So why do so many
people believe that video games aren’t educational?
To start with, I believe that part of the issue lies in the fact that video games are primarily a source of recreation.
As an enjoyable hobby, there are concerns about people, especially teens, spending too much time gaming
at the expense of other aspects of their life, such as homework. However, many of the skills which are involved
with playing games, like determination to complete a level or problem-solving abilities, are highly valued in
the workplace. Moreover, confidence with using and manipulating technology is key for the future.
Furthermore, though some people argue that gaming encourages an introverted nature, many games
require people to work as part of a team and also enable communication on a global scale.
To sum up, although games are a form of entertainment, many teach important skills which prepare today’s
teens for the workplace of tomorrow.
