                     Adverbs of manner

                 A. Match the rules with the examples.

                   1. Adverbs of manner tell us how we do something.            a. quiet – quietly, happy – happily
                   2. Most adverbs of manner are formed by adding -ly           b. good – well, late – late
                      to an adjective.                                          c. I drive slowly. She cooks well.
                   3. Some adverbs are irregular and don’t end in -ly.

                 B.  Look at the examples, then circle the correct words to complete the rules.

                       I did well in the test.
                       They all worked hard.
                   1. Adverbs of manner usually go before / after the verb they describe.
                       I finished the book quickly.
                       I slowly ate my dinner.
                   2. Adverbs of manner go before / after a direct object.
                       They look happy.
                       The coffee smells delicious.
                   3. When there is a direct object, the adverb can also go before / after the verb.
                   4. We use / don’t use adverbs of manner with certain verbs such as look, seem, smell, feel, sound.

                 C.  Complete the sentences by changing the adjectives into adverbs.

                 D.  Use the words in brackets to make adverbs. Put the adverbs in the correct place in the sentences.

                   1. The dog ate the bone. (hungry)
                   2. Jacky waited for her exam result. (nervous)
                   3. The phone rang. (noisy)
                   4. We were working on the project all weekend. (hard)
                   5. I bought my mum a present when we were shopping at the weekend. (secret)
                   6. The boy talked to his teacher. (shy)
