Being Socıable 1
Writing
A. Work in groups and discuss the questions.
1. What qualities are important in a friend? Make a list.
2. Is it better to have one or two close friends, or a large group of friends?
B. Read the paragraph. Tick the things on your
list from exercise A that the writer mentions.
To live a long and happy life you need
true friends. What do I mean by a true
friend?
Firstly, it’s a person who is always there
when you need them. If you need to laugh, cry,
talk about life or even sit quietly, a good friend
will always make time for you. Secondly,
a true friend should always be honest. They don’t
hide their feelings and they tell you when you
make a mistake.
Finally, a true friend doesn’t judge you,
even when they disagree with your ideas or
opinions. You might see your best friend every
day in class, or they might live on the other side
of the planet. It doesn’t matter if you
have one friend or twenty. What’s important is
that you find someone who will support you no
matter what.
C. Read the sentences and write the numbers next to the correct part of the paragraph in the text.
1. A topic sentence to introduce what the paragraph will be about.
2. Supporting sentences to give extra information about the topic sentence.
3. Linking words to organise the paragraph.
4. A short summary of the main points.
D. You have decided to enter a magazine writing competition about friendship. Write a 150-word paragraph
answering the question:
What are the traits of a true friendship?
Use the checklist to help you:
• Start with an interesting topic sentence.
• Give extra information to support your topic sentence.
• Use linkers to organise your ideas.
• Write one or two summary sentences.
