Major Physical Features of Africa


                                                           Deserts:

                                                           A desert is an area of the world that is extremely

                                                           dry. There is almost no rain in the desert. Life in the

                                                           desert is very di cult.

                                                           The Sahara Desert is the world’s largest hot desert,

                                                           and it covers most of Northern Africa.

                                                           The Sahara covers about 25% of the continent of
               Sahara Desert
                                                           Africa. It divides the continent into two regions.




                                                           Rivers:

                                                           A river is a  owing, moving stream of water.

                                                           Africa has two major rivers, the Nile River and the

                                                           Congo River.

            Lakes:

            A lake is a large body of water that is surrounded

            by land. A lake is not a part of an ocean or sea.

            Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa, and it is       Lake Victoria

            the third largest lake in the world.





            Mountains:

            A mountain is a landform that rises high above the

            surrounding area. It is made of rocks and earth.

            Africa has many mountains, but the highest

            mountain is called Mount Kilimanjaro.
