What Are Some Di erences between the Egyptian and
Sumerian Civilizations?
Location
Sumerian development was along the banks of
the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, which is in
present-day Iraq.
Egyptian development was along the Nile Valley.
Time
Sumerian civilization evolved, or developed
gradually, between 4500 B.C.E. and 4000 B.C.E.
Egyptian civilization evolved around 3150 B.C.E.

The Sumerians did not consider their ruler to be a with cuneiform scripting
god on Earth, or even descended from a god.
Egyptians worshipped more gods than the Sumerians.
The Egyptians considered their ruler, or “pharaoh,” as
a god on Earth, and they worshipped their ruler.
Writing Techniques
Sumerians developed a unique writing system and
they used clay tablets for writing. They invented the
cuneiform system, which looks like wedges in clay.

was found all around the Nile Delta. The Egyptians
used hieroglyphics, or pictographs.
