Lesson 11 The Age of Exploration
How did the
Most civilizations thrived separately from one another, but during
Age of Exploration start? the Dark Ages, the Chinese and Western Europeans started to send
explorers to learn about the surrounding world.
These explorers helped to expand the knowledge of their people
and opened trading routes between the di erent civilizations, thus
encouraging international trade.
The Mongol Empire o ered to protect travelers and merchants
moving overland between Asia and Western Europe. However, by
the end of the Mongol Empire, traveling among the two
destinations by land became very unsafe and nations started to
look for other routes across the sea.
Exploring Our World
The development of technology during the Renaissance helped to
improve shipbuilding, and the use of celestial or star-based
navigation allowed explorers to determine their locations on land
and at sea, and to travel far from their lands in search of new
trading routes, wealth, and knowledge.
