Comparatives
For all one-syllable and most two-syllable adjectives, we add -er in the comparative form.
We form the comparative form of adjectives with three or more syllables with more + adjective.
(For some two-syllable adjectives, such as useful and careful, we use more + adjective.)
We use the comparative form of adjectives to compare two people, animals, or things.
A. Complete the following sentences with the comparative form of the adjectives in brackets.
Example:
My mother is younger than my father. (young)
1. Jim Carey is Will Ferrell. (funny)
2. Thailand is Norway. (hot)
3. Russia is China. (big)
4. Learning English is learning German. (easy)
5. My sister my brother. (tall)
6. My teacher’s dictionary is your dictionary. (thick)
7. Bears foxes. (heavy)
8. The Amazon River is the Thames River. (long)
9. Germany is Egypt. (cold)
10. An apple is a hamburger. (healthy)
B. Complete the following sentences with the comparative form of the adjectives in brackets.
1. An English book is a French book. (expensive)
2. An armchair is a stool. (comfortable)
3. Going to work by bike is going by car. (healthy)
4. Watching a horror film is watching a soap opera. (frightening)
5. Living in Delhi is living in Istanbul. (economical)
6. Turkish food is German food. (delicious)
7. I think playing basketball is playing volleyball. (tiring)
8. Jennifer looks her sister. (energetic)
9. Timmy is his twin brother. (sociable)
