D. Read the text and answer the following questions.
Australia
Australia is the flattest, the driest, and the smallest of
the continents. The highest mountain, Mt Kosciuszko, is
only 2.228 m. In Australia, the weather is warm and the
cities are not crowded. People prefer to live in a house
with a garden. They spend hours in their garden,
growing flowers and vegetables. Much of the land in
Australia is desert or semi-desert. Because it is so dry
and little can grow, the heart of the continent is called
the “Dead Centre”. Most people choose to live on the
coast where the rainfall is greatest. Despite much of it
being dry, some small pockets of Australia are so wet
that rainforests grow.
The original inhabitants of Australia were the Aborigines
who came from the north by raft or boat. Today many
Aborigines choose to continue to live in the traditional
manner, but the majority live in towns. The first English
people arrived in Australia in 1788.
Australian plants, animals, and birds are unique
because the continent has been isolated for so long.
In Australia, all the major cities are on the coast, except
for Canberra. The beach plays an important part in
Australian life in summer. Water sports are very popular
in Australia. People go sailing, surfing, swimming, and
windsurfing or just laze in the sun. Australians always
perform very successfully in international swimming
competitions.
