                    Grammar 1 Future continuous

                 A. Read the text and answer the questions.

                   1. List three reasons to be optimistic about the future.
                   2. Do you think we will be living in a happier, healthier world in the future?

Let’s be optimistic about the future! It won’t be long before the majority of people are so aware of
the evils of plastic packaging that they’ll be refusing to buy any product wrapped in it. In ten or fifteen
years time, most of our electricity will be coming from renewable sources. This electricity will be heating
our homes and powering our cars. Perhaps we won’t even be driving so many cars. There’ll be more
people cycling to work, and public transport will be improving. We’ll be leaving our cars at home!
Yes, climate change is a huge problem, but as public protest becomes bigger, scientists, engineers
and governments will be working together to improve the situation. Then there’s social media. After
a lot of cyberbullying, people are learning how to deal with trolls and how to be kinder when posting
comments. When all this happens – and it will happen – we’ll be living in a happier, healthier world.

                 B. Discuss with a partner. Do you agree with these statements? Why/Why not?

                   1. This time tomorrow, I’ll be sitting in English class.
                   2. Ten years from now, people will be living on the moon.
                   3. When I’m fifty, people will still be using laptops and desktop computers.

                 C. Tick the true statements about the future continuous.
                   1. To make the future continuous, use will + be + infinitive.
                   2. We use the future continuous to talk about something happening at a point in the future.
                   3. After certain time references for the future, such as when, if or as soon as, we use present tenses.
                   4. Adverbs like still and just go immediately before the main verb in the future continuous.

                 D. Complete the sentences with the future continuous.

                                                      The future of cybercrime

It’s likely that the police 1 less time catching traditional bank robbers in the future
because bank robberies have decreased in the last twenty years. However, at the same time, the number
of people affected by online theft has been increasing. Similarly, hotel managers 2 more
attention to security in their hotels, as the number of thefts using special technology to open locked rooms
without a key is on the rise.
However, that’s if people even want to travel to other cities in the future, as despite increased security in
airports, potential terrorists 3 the plane they’re going to hijack – they 4
sophisticated computer programmes to hijack the plane from their sofa.

But we might not even be safe at home. As our houses become more reliant on technology, thieves
5 new ways to infect our systems with computer viruses. At the same time, computer
hackers 6 how they can attack our smart or driverless cars.
