Did You Know?

Computers and technology have developed, thanks to the
inspiration of many people. Their ideas and advances in
technology were the reason why our lives are easier today.
In this book, we’ll get to know a few of these people.

Many people of all ages enjoy playing computer games.
They first appeared during the 1950s and have become a
part of our lives since then.
Computers not only entertain us, but also help us with
everyday tasks. We can shop online, book plane tickets,
find information, and do so much more with just a click
and without leaving home.
One very important development has to do with ‘speech
recognition software’ which has made computers
accessible to people who can’t use a keyboard and a
mouse.
I use speech recognition
software to do a lot of things.
I even use it to order pizza!

The first ‘official’ use of
modern speech recognition
technology was ‘Audrey’,
a system designed by Bell
Laboratories in the 1950s.
Audrey was able to recognise
the numbers one to nine by a
single voice!
