Barter
Before inventing money, people created a system for
trading called “barter.”
Barter means the exchange of goods and services for
other goods and services.
People traded things they did not need or want for things
they needed or wanted. A farmer might have bartered
eggs for cloth. An artist might have bartered a painting
for a new chair.
But what happened when you had nothing to o er to
barter or trade?
People had to create something that would be accepted.
People invented money to exchange, or pay, for goods
and services.
