Many kingdoms existed in this area. The

            Kush Kingdom (Sudan now) was one of the

            largest iron-making civilizations. The Aksum

            Kingdom came to power in the  rst century

            A.D. They made their own coins out of gold,

            copper, and silver.

                    The Zagwe Dynasty started ruling

            Ethiopia in about 1137 A.D. They were

            dedicated to building monuments honoring


            religion. The Amharic people lived south of

            the Zagwe, and they ruled out the last Zagwe

            leader in 1270 A.D.

                    Also, many other empires existed in the

            area, such as the Empire of Ghana, the

            Songhai Empire, Great Zimbabwe, and more.
