            What Buildings Were in a Typical Greek City?



            Although each city in ancient Greece had its

            own unique structures, each city also had

            buildings that were similar across the land.

            Agora: The center of activity in each city.

            Acropolis: The highest point in large cities

            that was used to defend the city.


            Temples: The places for worshipping gods.

            Theater: The place for plays during festivals.

            How Did the Ancient Greeks Contribute to Our Life Today?


            • Ancient Greece was the birthplace of the Olympic Games.

            • The Greek thinker Hippocrates did experiments to show that disease comes from germs

               rather than punishment of the gods. The Hippocratic oath that doctors take today is


               named after him.

            • It was a Greek who developed the idea of latitude and longitude and made maps using

               these important location lines.

            • Ancient Greece began the idea of democracy and citizenship, where citizens could vote

               and make their voices heard by people who represented them in the government.
