Intergovernmental versus Nongovernmental Organizations
Intergovernmental Organizations
Intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) are
established and controlled by governments.
They di er in their criteria and types depending
on the purpose and function of the
organization. Some organizations are
established to resolve problems or debates
between countries. Others are established to
form a certain treaty between countries for
mutual bene t.
For example, the United Nations is an United Nations headquarters in New York City, USA
intergovernmental organization which looks
after the peace and the security of the world.
Nongovernmental Organizations
Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) do not
fall under governmental control. They do not
aim for pro t, and they care about humanitarian
problems.
Nongovernmental organizations’ main targets
are mostly education, health care, public policy,
social reform, human rights, and environment
protection. An example of international
nongovernmental organization is CARE, which Nongovernmental organization providing
