How do animals use directions to nd their way?
Animals like whales move north each year, from Mexico to the waters of
Alaska, to feed on lots of sh. Then the whales move south, back to Mexico,
so baby whales can grow in warm waters. Butter ies often move from
north to south and back again for food. Many kinds of birds travel from the
east to the west every year. Over one million animals in Africa move north
and south, east and west in the Great Migration.
Can we nd directions without a compass or GPS?
Before the existence of the compass or GPS, people
used to nd their direction at daytime guided by the
sun and the shadows of objects on the ground. At
nighttime, people knew their direction by spotting
the North Star in the sky. These methods are still
used till today.
