            Maps and Globes

            • Each community has its own location. To show someone

where you live, you might use a map or a globe. Maps

              and globes are geographic tools.

            • A map presents us with information about the world in a

simple, visual way. It is a representation of a speci c

place on a at surface. A map gives a two-dimensional

presentation of certain places. On a map, you might also

see a scale, symbols, and grids.

            • A globe is a spherical, or round, representation of the

Earth. It gives a three-dimensional presentation of the

              entire world.

            • Maps and globes teach us about the world by showing

sizes and shapes of countries. They also show us

locations of land features and distances between places.
