Let’s Observe
Using Maps and Understanding Their Symbols
• Using the compass rose, we can see that
Egypt is in the north of Africa, while
Botswana lies in the southern part of Africa.
• On the map of Africa, you will not nd
symbols like the hospital sign, as they are
more visible on speci c areas or street
maps.
• Maps of continents usually show grids,
borders, and landforms.
• Maps of cities or towns mainly show
symbols or important places like hospitals,
bus stations, and metros.
Map of Africa
• If you study the world using a map, you will see that
Asia is in the far east of the world.
North America is in the far west of the world.
• This makes you think that there is no link between
both continents. But, actually, they are closer than you
think.
• If you check the world using a globe, you will see that
they are right next to each other and they are
separated by the Paci c Ocean.
• In conclusion, the east and west of the globe are
linked together as Earth is a sphere.
