About the Middle East

The Middle East is a region in the middle of the world.

A region is an area that has common characteristics such

as history, traditions, ideas, and social behavior. In relation

to the Middle East, the continent of Europe is to the

northwest, Africa is to the southwest, and Asia is to the

east and northeast. The Middle East is found in the

Northern Hemisphere as well as the Eastern Hemisphere.

The Middle East is a geographical and cultural region.

Many forms of science and writing began in the Middle

East region. The western side of the Middle East is

bordered by the Mediterranean Sea, where Lebanon

and Syria are located. Though located in the continent

of Africa, Egypt is considered to be a major part of the

Middle East region. Some countries like Turkey are in

the Middle East region but share the characteristics of

Europe. 29
