Not only did con icts emerge because of oil control and trade in the Middle East, but also a lot of

political con icts spread in the area.

Egypt, one of the most powerful countries in the region, fought ve wars with Israel between 1948 and

1973. However, Egypt’s President, Anwar Sadat, decided to take a big step, signing a peace treaty with

the enemy, Israel, in 1978. This got him assassinated by an Egyptian extremist group three years later.

Iran had also gotten in some trouble in the

region, but this time, the problem was with

the United States. Iran was under the rule of

a shah, who the Iranian people considered a

tyrant, using the Iranian oil trade to get rich

            while the people remained poor.

The Iranian people revolted and got under

the rule of an Islamic leader, who used Islam

to spread his extreme views and announced

that Islam will be the country’s new law.
