Queen Elizabeth always tried to avoid wars and even

ended a war with France. She wanted England to be

safe and prosperous, but when Queen Mary of

Scotland was killed in England, the king of Spain

sent the Spanish Armada to invade England.

The English navy destroyed the Spanish Armada and

made many of its ships sink, or go down in the

water. Fewer than half of Spain’s ships could return

home.
