            What Is the Ottoman Empire?

The Ottoman Empire, known in Europe as the Turkish Empire, was one of the major powers between

the 14 and the early 20 century.

The Ottomans established a state that controlled most of Southeast Europe, Western Asia, and North

Africa by conquests, which also ended the Byzantine Empire.

The city of Constantinople was taken from the Byzantines and became the Ottoman Empire’s capital,

which is known as Istanbul in Turkey today.

The Ottoman Empire ended after their defeat in World War I, and most of its land was taken by the

French and the British. Eventually, the Turkish people revolted against the Allies after World War I in the

Turkish War of Independence, which resulted in the establishment of the Republic of Turkey.
